The Hartford Awards $300,000 Grant To The Shelter For Women
Grant will fund programming for adolescent girls in Asylum Hill
Hartford, Conn., April 15, 2011 – As part of its focus on revitalizing the Asylum Hill neighborhood, The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., (NYSE: HIG), awarded a $300,000 grant to the Shelter for Women, a subsidiary of the Village for Families & Children. The grant will be distributed over three years and will fund the Community Life Programs for Girls at the Center for Family Life at Gray Lodge.
“The Hartford is committed to supporting the Asylum Hill neighborhood,” said Beth Bombara, senior vice president and controller of The Hartford, and member of the board of directors for The Village. “We want to make a difference for the families that live here, the children who study and play here and for the people who work here. The Community Life Programs for Girls will provide young women with the skills essential for success and empower them to reach their full potential.”
The Community Life Programs for Girls will serve young women from primarily the Asylum Hill neighborhood. Through small group discussions, one-on-one coaching and case management, the program will focus on life skills, financial literacy and academic support. The Center’s program will support its participants achieve greater self-confidence, authenticity in relationships and enhanced judgment skills.
“Our goal is to expand and better serve the Hartford community and meet the changing needs of young women and their families within this neighborhood,” said Galo Rodriguez, president and CEO of The Village. “We are grateful for the continued support The Hartford has demonstrated to our community.”
Members of The Hartford’s Professional Women’s Network visited the Shelter for Women on March 29 to learn about volunteer opportunities with the Community Life Programs for Girls. State Representative Marie Lopez Kirkley-Bey was among the speakers at the event and emphasized the importance of community-based services.
“As a long time resident of Asylum Hill and as the state representative for this district I would like to personally thank the Hartford for their continued and generous support in Asylum Hill,” said Kirkley Bey. “The additional services being offered at the Center with the Hartford’s support will give the young women in Asylum Hill the tools and support to change their lives and I know firsthand that these services are needed here to help accomplish these changes.”
In 2010, The Hartford announced a new strategy to improve the Asylum Hill neighborhood for local residents and employees. The company, which has been headquartered in Asylum Hill since 1921, increased its focus on the neighborhood and committed $7 million in contributions over five years. The Hartford is partnering with the city and community organizations on key projects and providing funding for education, community support services and neighborhood revitalization initiatives.
